Narrative Theory Work

Narative theory work
Before we started filming we looked at a few theorists to help understand how storylines are constructed and how things are put together and what elements are included in some music videos. After looking at each theory in detail and already having our storyline for our own music video we realised that each of these three theories are included in our own video. For example: our music video is Howl by Florence And The Machine we have created a story where, there are a couple who are in love (equilibrium), something mysterious and unknown happens and split up (disequilibrium), then they get back together in the end (new equilibrium). This is Todorov’s theory. Also we have included opposites such as human and wolf which proves Strauss’s theory. Further more we have included certain elements of the video to link with the lyrics of the song for example one of the lyrics is ‘I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground’ this is where we have covered feet in blood and taken a shot of the performer walking this is illustration. Also we have made the performer the narrator and performer which, demonstrates Andrew Goodwin’s theory.

Claude Levi Strauss
Strauss believed that oppositions created a narrative. He believed that narrative tension was based on conflict. Some examples of music videos have used simple oppositions to create narratives it can be as simple as: night and day, black and white, aliens and humans, cats and dogs, young and old etc. Beyonce for example in her music video called single ladies uses black and white throughout the video.

Tzvelen Todorov
Todorov stated that films and music videos begin with an equilibrium, a calm period. Then something disrupts it which is called disequilibrium, which is a period of unsettlement. This is then followed by a new peaceful equilibrium where everything brings chaos to an end. An example of this is Katy Perry’s music video Hot n’ Cold where she’s in love about to get married which is the equilibrium he runs away from the alter (disequilibrium) then they do get married in the end which is the new equilibrium ending all the mayhem.

Andrew Goodwin
Andrew identifies 4 key aspects of music videos which include: seeing the sound, narrative and performance, The star image and Relation of visuals to song.Seeing the sound Goodwin started with how many chorus’s and verse’s there were in the song. Then he looks at the voice of the song and its uniqueness, how it can be used as a form of identification which work well with the star image. Also he looked at how songs can be seen as stories and how the singer is the story teller.Narrative and performance Narrative and performance work like a pair it makes it easier for the audience to watch the video repeatedly without loosing interest. The artist that acts as both the performer and narrator helps to increase the realism of the video. Yet the lip sync and miming play a major part in the video and the audience need to believe it is real. The star image This is a vital aspect of music videos. The star image has an important part to play in the music video production process. An example of a famous star image would be Michael Jackson and his bright and shiny clothing.

Relation of visuals to song
This can be shown through illustration where music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre. Also Goodwin stated that meanings and effects are manipulated and shown repeatedly through the video in order to stick in our minds.
