Photos of location

We took images of Plessey woods at two times of the day when we were planning on filming, we took one at night and one during the day, we then compared them to see which time of day it would be best to film, this helped us make our decision when we were planning so that we could put this into our planning timetable and be at the location at the right time of the day. This also helped us decide whether we would need lighting and then arrange for a time to get the equipment up.

Diary Entry 7

This week we have taken more photos of the location, props and costume. This is so that it makes it more clear as to why we chose these particular objects and places to feature in our music video.
Props
The props we have used include: A drum set, microphone stand and microphone, a keyboard and drum sticks. We chose not to include guitars in our performance as there are no guitars present in the song. Also we covered the instruments with leaves to again link back to Florence And The Machine as she uses alot of wildlife and flowers. For example on her album cover 'Lungs' She is infront of trees and flowers. Below is a picture of our props.

Location
We decided to have our music video in Plessey Woods. This is because the song howl's connotations is all about a wolf and the lyrics 'Bloodied feet across the hallowed ground.' Would be outside. We imagined the song outside as our storyline was based on a transformation of a girl to a wolf which would be seen out side.

Costume
For the main performer we decided the band should we in all black to emphasise the sinister side of the performer. Yet for the narrative for Charlotte (main character) we decided to have her in white to show their are two sides to her evil and good. On the other hand for the male character we decided he should be in black as the two main characters are opposing. Also this was to emphasise the conflict between the two of them.

Rough Cut Video

This is the rough cut for our music video Howl by Florence And The Machine. I think overall we worked very hard and I am happy that we didnt have any gaps throughout our first cut of our video. Yet after looking through the feedback I can see alot of improvements that are needed to be made for example we need more performance throughout the video and the story line and transformation deffinitley needs to be clearer. To do this we have decided to include a dog in the final video so that the story line is stronger.

Rough Cut Feedback - Mr Bland (Media Teacher)

Rough Cut Feedback - Mr Convery (Media Technician)

Rough Cut Feedback

Our Media class watched the rough cut of our music video and they each filled in a sheet of feedback, telling us what they liked about it and a list of honest constructive ideas to make it better. Here is our research from the 8 pupils who filled in our feedback sheets. A lot of the points have been repeated by different people so i just summed it all up into bullet points.

What you like about their video so far:
- Clear narrative
- Clever use of costume to show innocence and evil
- Good acting
- The pan up of the feet
- The sky time lapse
- Blinking on the piano sound (gives a good sense of mystery and builds the tension)
- Charlottes performance, good facial expressions, good syncing
- Running through the woods scene, very effective
- Good locations
- The shakey camera when running
- Clear story line and wide range of edits
- Hand held camera shots
- Blood on leaves and feet
- Blood tear drop - on both characters
- Section with walking over the camer is really effective
- I like the idea of her running off at the same time
- Turning into old people walking away, showing they age together
- Hand on tree to show transformation
- Perfromance all outside, link well with narrative and story

A list of constructive and honest ideas for what could be better:
- More variation of shots during performance
- More monster like when transformed
- Do more steady pan of Odean sign
- Have full drum kit
- Make more clear the reason for the long nails
- Main singer looked like she was about to laugh in some scenes
- Some of tree shots a bit dark
- Perhaps introduce a feature after the long nails
- Introduce performace earlier in the video
- Emphasise time on watch
- Running shots could be cut shorter sometimes
- Unclear what is wrong/happening to her
- Blood on feet?

Diary Entry 8

This week we have focused on finishing our final cut for our video. This was very time consuming as we had a lot of footage to re shoot as the feedback we had although it was critical, it was very useful. We were able to change alot of scenes in the music video in order to improve. I think the performance and the transformation are alot clearer in the final cut compared with the rough cut. The dog helped the transformation seem alot stronger. Also taking all the band equipiment including: a drum set, keyboard and keyboard stand, microphone and microphone stand and drum sticks. We were very happy with out final cut we tried to improve by the demographics comments as much as possible within the time we were given. I think we have definitely improved a lot from the rough cut.

Final Cut Of Music Video Howl

This is the final cut of our music video Howl by Florence And The Machine. We were very pleased with the result as it was a big improvement from our rough cut. We have aimed to listen to all of our audiences feedback for example we have changed the performance, stopped the laughing during the video to create a more intense atmosphere, Make the transformation clearer by using a dog which we think has worked much better than just using fake nails and fake blood. We had to re film alot of the video but it was definitley worth it as the outcome has proved to be alot better itself.

Album, CD insert and Advert planning

Album cover CD and Advert Planning

Florence And The Machine’s album cover ‘Lungs’ looks too complicated as you get lost in the background. The background consists of: a patterned blue carpet and trees with birds which makes the background stand out more than she does. Also the bright colours of the birds and flowers, again draws your attention to the background rather than her, which is why we didn’t like this particular album cover. Florence And The Machine always brings out unusual albums for example as well as ‘Lungs’ she brought out the album ‘Drumming song’ again this is a strange front cover as she isn’t looking directly at the camera, she is looking down and away which gives a sinister feel to her album creating darkness.

Kings Of Leon brought the album out called ‘Only By Night.’ This album is image based which is very effective. It is also simplistic with the clear bold text and the green and black background. I like that not too many colours are used as it doesn’t distract you from the main image. The merging of the faces is very clever as it shows transformation itself which is perfect for our idea. Also this would be a clever concept for our own album cover as it links with breaking boundaries.

Album Planning

Unbound is the name of our album as it is ironic because she is bound to being a wolf yet he releases her as if she is unbound. Also she’s going beyond boundaries by transforming into a wolf.

Definitions of Unbound: Freed from bonds or restraints; released: an unbound captive. And not restrained or tied down by bonds.

The idea for our front album front cover is to split the face into four like the Kings Of Leon album and merge the performers face with the dogs and make the eyes the centre of the cover. Also we plan to do this in black and white and enhance the eyes as it makes her stand out more and will draw you in to the image. Also this image on the front cover itself will show transformation. For the back of the album we decided to do the back of there heads in sections of four like the front.

CD insert planning

For the CD insert we have decided to have a shattered watch cupped in her hands with fake blood and nails to emphasise the abnormality of her life. Also the watch throughout the music video is an important motif as it bounds her to being a werewolf. The broken watch signifies that she is out of time or that she is free. Also Florence And The Machine have used hands holding lungs which is where we got some inspiration from to do ours.

Advert Planning
Our advert idea will be the performer wrapped in ropes in a chair with the spotlight on her head merged with dogs head. This is to again link with the theme transformation. The ropes are too exaggerate ‘Unbound’ yet to show that she is bound in ways as she cannot contain the wolf within.
